Mats are a must for Yoga. During a yoga session, your body sheds thousands of skin cells and transfers body oils and sweat onto mats. As a result, yoga mats are home to stubborn germs that survive for several hours and several days.

Many of us, only wipe the yoga mats once in a while with dry dusters. We do not realize that the bacteria and fungi found on a typical yoga mat can cause plantar warts, athlete's foot, ringworms, staph infections, and many other skin infections. A recent study noted that inadequately cleaned yoga mats had over 12 million counts of germs.

It is very easy to protect yourself. First, never share a yoga mat and do not use anyone else's mat. Secondly, before use, always clean the mat with a water based disinfectant grade cleaner with anti-fungal properties. Alcohol-based cleaners are not recommended as they spoil the mat colours and liners. And lastly, once a month, do a deep cleaning with laundry detergent and allow the mat to air dry.
