Most of the hand soaps or hand washes do not contain any germ-killing active ingredients and predominantly rely upon the cleaning action with water to remove the germs from the hands.
Most disinfectant or antibacterial hand soaps contain either (i) Quaternary Ammonium Chlorides (Quats), (ii) Chloroxylenol (PCMX), (iii) Triclosan (TCC), or (iv) Triclocarban (TCB) as germ-killing active ingredients.
In the case of disinfectant hand soaps, post-wash a small amount of the germ-killing active ingredient remains on the hands, which tend to slow down the germ growth for some time. The latest research suggests that "Quats" based disinfectant or antibacterial hand washes, as compared to other actives, offer the most effective microbial protection along with better skin safety.
